The Washington Redskins’ struggling secondary took another blow yesterday when cornerback Carlos Rogers broke his thumb, which could hinder his playmaking ability in coming weeks. Rogers, a first-round draft pick in 2005, broke the bone in the 25-22 loss to Tennessee at FedEx Field, and is expected to play next week at Indianapolis with the injury protected.Top cornerback Shawn Springs was able to play for the first time all season, though, Nike Giovani Bernard Jersey Bengals Giovani Bernard Womens Mens Youth Jersey and felt fine afterward. Springs was suffering from abdominal and groin injuries but was in several defensive packages, mostly on third downs and obvious passing situations. Gregg Williams, assistant head coach-defense, said he was encouraged by Springs’s play and would have liked to have used him more against the Titans; Springs would appear likely to start next week barring a setback.”I would have liked to get him in some longer down and distance plays to get him out there,” Williams said, “but our game plan coming in was not to fatigue him. We just didn’t force as many third-down opportunities in order to get him out there. I would have liked to get him out there more, but we didn’t do a good job with that.”Washington has just two interceptions all season and Rogers has dropped several balls thrown his way; holding on to the ball now stands Nike Giovani Bernard Jersey to be a bigger chore. The Redskins were without their two starting defensive tackles — Cornelius Griffin (hip) and Joe Salave’a (calf) — as well and both will be evaluated this week after missing practice all of last week. With Springs back, reserve cornerback Mike Rumph was inactive for the first time this season. The Redskins were exploring options to sign free agent defensive back Troy Vincent last week, making contact with him, according to sources. Late this summer in a room at the Boston University School of Medicine, Ann McKee pulled the brain of a Hall of Fame football player named Lou Creekmur from the box in which it had arrived and nearly gasped. This StoryGoodell defends NFL to Congress about concussionsNFL leaders testify about head injuriesCTE is a real risk for football playersInjured brainView All Items in This StoryView Only Top Items Nike Jason Snelling Jersey in This StoryAs a neuropathologist and the co-director of BU’s Nike Jason Snelling Jersey Falcons Jason Snelling Womens Mens Youth Jersey Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy, she has spent more than two decades examining the brains of people who had suffered from dementia, searching for the telltale signs of what might have actually caused the condition. But from the moment she took Creekmur’s brain into her hands, placing it on the table, it was obvious as to what had tormented him in the final years of his life. The brain itself had shrunk. There was a widening of the ventricles where fluids had filled tiny cisterns in an effort to replace the lost mass. And structures important to things like language and learning were shriveled. When the slides of his brain matter were prepared for her to study, she didn’t even need to place them under a microscope: the deposits of tau, a protein found in the central nervous system, signifying chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) or "punch-drunk syndrome" were so large all she had to do was lay the slide on a light table to make a diagnosis.Though Creekmur was 82 when he died this July, he did not have Alzheimer’s as many thought. Rather McKee was looking at the most obvious case of dementia caused by head trauma she had ever seen in a football player."It was clear from the moment I first saw it," she said.McKee expects to announce her discovery on Capitol Hill Wednesday at a House Judiciary subcommittee hearing on on head trauma in football players. Creekmur’s brain is the 11th out of 11 former football players the BU center has examined for CTE and discovered evidence of the condition, buttressing the argument that repeated concussions in football have long-term effects and can lead to dementia at a young age.Wednesday’s hearing, which will include NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, and DeMaurice Smith, the executive director of the NFL Players Association along with several medical experts, is the latest in a series of such hearings called by Congress in the last three years on the overall subject of the health and care of retired NFL players. This will be the first, however, to directly deal with concussions. And it comes a month after a study conducted for the NFL by researchers at the University of Michigan revealed higher than normal numbers of memory-related diseases in former players.NFL spokesman Greg Aiello would not comment directly on the Creekmur findings but said the league believes the Michigan study shows a need for more research."We know concussions can lead to problems if they are not treated properly and that is why we have been committed to aggressively addressing this issue in a comprehensive way," he said. The NFL is getting more pressure on the subject than in the past from the players’ union, which was accused late in the tenure of former executive director Gene Upshaw, of ignoring the medical needs of retired players. The NFL Players Association now has formed its own concussions committee."This happens to be an area where there is controversy, where there are strongly held positions," Smith said at a news conference Tuesday, adding that a significant amount of information now exists on head trauma and football. "We need to get this right."Creekmur, who played 10 seasons as an offensive lineman with the Detroit Lions in the 1950s, would not at first seem like a prime candidate for CTE. While he broke his nose 13 times during his career, he was adamant about taping his fingers and ankles and was so rarely injured, he never missed a game, according to his wife Caroline, who married him in 1976 after his career was over. He was a gifted speaker with a bright mind, she said, a man who loved to talk to groups and had a wonderful memory. But about five years ago, he began to deteriorate. Caroline noticed changes in his behavior. He didn’t go out as much and grew moodier. As his ability to talk fell apart he grew frustrated and sometimes turned violent. She took him to doctors who diagnosed him with dementia but told her she would never know the cause of his mental condition until after he died and his brain could be examined. Some told her he had Alzheimer’s, but Caroline had family members who suffered from Alzheimer’s and her husband didn’t act the way they did. He still understood the world around him but struggled at times to maneuver within it."I could see the sadness in his eyes," she said. With the dementia diagnosis he was a part of the NFL’s Plan 88, a fund named after Baltimore Colts tight end John Mackey, who is struggling with similar issues. This qualified him for funding from the league for which Caroline said she is "grateful." But when her husband died a few days after falling at an assisted-living facility where she normally stayed with him, she wanted his brain to be studied."I just hope it helps players now that they know this is a possibility and can happen" she said of the diagnosis of CTE in her husband.McKee said the Creekmur case is important because his brain clearly shows that he did not have Alzheimer’s and that the damage in the brain is undoubtedly CTE."I think it’s a recognition that NFL players were coming down with this disorder for a long Falcons Jason Snelling Womens Mens Youth Jersey time," she said. "We’ve only seen CTE in individuals who have had head trauma. You can’t attribute that to Alzheimer’s."While some critics of the CTE research might point to Creekmur’s age as a reason to not take the diagnosis seriously — many people in their 80s suffer from forms of dementia — McKee said the fact he was so old and clearly did not have Alzheimer’s is an important breakthrough."In the past it’s been easy to minimize the older players because we know Alzheimer’s is so common," she said. "Because we know this is CTE we also know it could have been prevented."Staff writer Mark Maske contributed to this report.» This Story:Read |Watch | Comments/* BEGIN TOP STRIP STYLES */#customTS-SingleThumbBlog width:454px;margin-bottom:6px;padding-bottom:6px;font:11px Arial;border-bottom:solid 1px #CCC;#customTS-SingleThumbBlog p margin:0;padding:0;#customTS-SingleThumbBlog a:link, #customTS-SingleThumbBlog a:visited text-decoration:none;font-weight:bold;#customTS-SingleThumbBlog a:hover text-decoration:underline;color:#C00;#customTS-SingleThumbBlog .redkicker font-weight:bold;color:#C00;margin-bottom: 4px;#customTS-SingleThumbBlog .thumbSlot float:left;width:80px;#customTS-SingleThumbBlog .textSlot float:right;width:368px;#customTS-SingleThumbBlog ul padding:0;list-style-type:none;font-weight:bold;margin:0;#customTS-SingleThumbBlog li background-image:url(http://media.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/images/bullet_3x3_999999.gif);background-repeat:no-repeat;background-position:0px .4em;padding-left:6px;padding-bottom:2px; Latest Posts From NFL News Feed More Posts | Sports Blog Directory #botPromoStrip background: #fff url(‘http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/sports/longterm/2007/photo/gray624.jpg’) no-repeat; padding: 7px 10px; margin: 5px 0 10px 0;More in the NFL SectionThe LeagueA conversation about what’s happening today in the NFL.NFL News FeedMark Maske keeps you up-to-date with all of the latest news in the NFL.Redskins InsiderJason Reid provides exlusive analysis of the Redskins.
On behalf of Jason Campbell, I asked Al Saunders this past week what I thought was a perfectly benign question:[an error occurred while processing this directive]If the Redskins’ offensive pooh-bah allowed Campbell to run more of the no-huddle offense again today — thereby calling a good majority of his own plays for the second straight week — would the starting quarterback be entitled to half of Saunders’s weekly salary?”Well, if he gives half of his to me for designing what we do within the two-minute concept,” Saunders said.Let’s see: Campbell’s base salary is $572,500 this season; Saunders earns $2 million. What a deal for the kid, no?And you thought they ran the ball for philosophical reasons. Ha!But I digress. As some of you know, the Redskins play the Cowboys today in Dallas. This is being forecast as a beat-down of epic proportions, a blowout that will clearly illustrate the haves and the have-nots in the NFC East. It’s the youth and glitz of the Glamour ‘Boys — Tony Romo, T.O. and their fuel-injected, attack-mode offense — vs. two Golden Oldies: Joe Gibbs and something called a Jumbo Package. For you non-football fans, a Jumbo Package involves a team’s behemoths lining up very closely together and reenacting one of the game’s oldest rituals of brute force and will. The goal is to hopefully advance the ball, oh, eight inches.Depending on your bent, this physical style of play is either a) blood-and-guts football the way Gibbs has always liked it. Or b) A mumbo-jumbo package — essentially Vince Lombardi’s outdated offense from 41 years ago.Look, Gibbs has every alibi at his disposal to run the ball to his heart’s content today. Clinton Portis is coming off another 100-yard-plus performance. They’re corn-silk thin at wide receiver: Santana Moss is still hurting, Brandon Lloyd is out for the year and the Redskins are so desperate they brought back the kid they always cut — Titans Zach Brown Womens Mens Youth Jersey Jimmy Farris, whom George Solomon believes should have a movie made about him starring Mark Wahlberg. And yet Gibbs should take Farris over the Jumbo Package today. Saunders should take the no-huddle over a run-heavy attack. If the legacy of Gibbs indeed hangs in the balance the next few weeks, it’s not time to return to what he knows and what was once successful; it’s time to go down swinging, to take the fight to all these pass-happy teams stretching the field and ditching conservative play-calling in the new-millennium NFL. Use the new league motto: attack. Score on others as they score on you.Gibbs, who always leads with his heart, might appreciate this confession: I don’t do numbers well, either. In the past 20 years, I’ve never witnessed a single statistic win a game I’ve covered. I have seen intangibles such as perseverance and grit somehow result in championships. The best line I ever heard about stats came from Han Solo as he was negotiating an asteroid field. When he told by the droid C-3PO that the odds of surviving such an ordeal were something like 37 million to 1, he replied, "Never tell me the odds," before gunning the throttle. In some hope-against-hope lecture, I envision Gibbs telling his assistants and video coordinators the same thing; Lord knows that, at its core, the running game plays into every one of Gibbs’s values about hard work and will being able to overcome other limitations. But here’s the problem with that logic: You can’t win in the NFL with just a lightsaber anymore. You can’t win with the Force alone.Every week, there is incontrovertible evidence against the running game, against even balance, in the NFL.The four division leaders that seem on a collision course to meet in the respective conference championship games — the Patriots, Colts, Cowboys and Packers — all feature spread-the-field passing offenses that put up points.Twenty-one teams did not have a back rush for 100 yards last week, including six teams that scored more points than Washington. Eight teams won that did not have a back rush for 90 yards.Everybody throws now. The Rams, for goodness sake, put up 37 points; Steven Jackson ran for just 76 yards in their win.The Patriots are the standard; for all this talk of how multidimensional pro football’s best team is, New England has had a running back rush for more than 100 yards in just three of their nine wins. The day they annihilated the Cowboys by scoring 48 points, the Patriots had 75 yards rushing and averaged 2.6 yards per carry. These numbers are not used to dissuade Portis from carrying the ball more than 20 times per game, because he might be the Redskins’ best hope right now. It’s also not to lose sight of winning a game any way possible, even with a smash-mouth set near the goal line.It is to encourage Gibbs and his staff to abandon fear and all the worries that go with clock management. Campbell sifted through a barrage of questions last week regarding how much liberty he felt in the no-huddle offense. At one juncture, he was asked if he felt hamstrung by his own staff.”You have to do what you’re allowed to do,” he said, diplomatically.Campbell does not have Romo’s arsenal of receivers. But if he shows the same creativity and ingenuity from last week — and Gibbs and Saunders trust his instincts — all of a sudden you’ve got a genuine shootout in Texas instead of a projected blowout. That’s a much fairer fight.Whatever happens from today forward — postseason or Nike Zach Brown Jersey bust — at least they can finish Nike Zach Brown Jersey Titans Zach Brown Womens Mens Youth Jersey with the knowledge they all went down swinging together.Whatever Saunders has to forfeit to Campbell in salary, it will come back tenfold in respect for him and Gibbs.» This Story:Read | Comments

Virginia at PittsburghRecords: Season opener for both. When: 7 p.m.Where: Heinz Field, Pittsburgh.TV: ESPNU.Quarterback Club: In 2003, when Virginia played Pittsburgh in the Continental Tire Bowl, Virginia Coach Al Groh chatted up Tyler Palko, then a backup behind Rod Rutherford. He enjoyed shooting the breeze with Palko, a player Virginia did not recruit heavily. Three years later, Groh might not find the experience quite as pleasant. Palko is now one of the Big East’s best quarterbacks, while Groh’s signal caller, Christian Olsen, has never started a college game. How Olsen performs in his first significant action of a long and circuitous career will determine how the Cavaliers start their season. The game should give an indication of just where the Cavaliers stand, playing a decent BCS conference team on the road at night. If Olsen can’t deliver, Virginia won’t like the answer.Starry Night: The Panthers may not be a national powerhouse, but their defense possesses two players deserving of that spotlight. Cornerback Darrelle Revis allows Pittsburgh to employ Coach Dave Wannstedt’s favored defense, in which Nike Cortland Finnegan Jersey safeties and linebackers put pressure up front and the cornerbacks play lock-down single coverage. One of those linebackers, H.B. Blades, should put quite a bit of pressure on Olsen. The son of former NFL defensive back Bennie Blades, he’s one college football’s hardest hitters and a possible first-round NFL pick.All-Pro: Both coaches are former NFL head coaches, a rarity in college football. Twelve schools employ former NFL bosses and only eight games this season besides this one will feature two former NFL coaches. They are Florida Atlantic (Howard Schnellenberger) vs. South Carolina (Steve Spurrier); Hawaii (June Jones) vs. Idaho (Dennis Erickson); Hawaii vs. Oregon State (Mike Riley); South Carolina vs. Rams Cortland Finnegan Womens Mens Youth Jersey Kentucky (Rich Brooks); Nebraska (Bill Callahan) vs. Southern California (Pete Carroll); Oregon State vs. Southern Cal; Oregon State vs. Idaho; Virginia vs. Georgia Tech (Chan Gailey). So Frank Beamer just might have a little more mercy and sportsmanship than then-Hokies coach L.W. Reiss (we hear he wore Nike Cortland Finnegan Jersey Rams Cortland Finnegan Womens Mens Youth Jersey a visor), but this game will resemble that one in spirit, if not in score. Northeastern is a Division I-AA team, and a bad one at that. The Huskies won two games last season, though as Beamer pointed out several times this week, they did lose several close games.Glennon Gets Going: Redshirt sophomore Sean Glennon has thrown 11 passes his entire career, making the opener a perfect warmup, something like an NFL preseason game for a rookie. While the challenge won’t be imposing, it’s important that Glennon gets off to a fast start to build confidence for next week’s ACC opener against North Carolina and beyond. He has a strong arm and is more athletic than most assume; now it’s a matter of gaining experience.Overmatched: The Hokies have one of the best defenses in the country, which is almost unfair. If the Huskies score any points, it’ll be an upset. Northeastern’s best offensive threat, senior tight end Kendrick Ballantyne, is 6 feet 4 and 240 pounds, and he’ll be blanketed by Xavier Adibi, one of the best coverage linebackers in college football.– Adam KilgoreNavy vs. East CarolinaRecords: Season opener for both. When: 5:30 p.m.Where: Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.TV: CSTV.Radio: WFED (1050 AM), WNAV (1430).Ready for Launch: Navy led the nation in rushing last season; East Carolina ranked 112th in the nation in rushing defense. But the cards aren’t all in Navy’s favor. East Carolina’s offense could be problematic for Navy’s defense. Pirates quarterback James Pinkney made vast strides in his junior year, and much of the same is expected from him. Wide receiver Aundrae Allison is the most individually threatening player to Navy — last year he caught 83 passes (fourth-highest average per game in the nation) for 1,024 yards (fourth-highest number of passes). Allison exemplifies East Carolina’s offensively balanced style. He can go deep, but he must also be contained on the short routes as his forte is catching short passes and converting them into long gains.Warning Signs: Coach Paul Johnson isn’t big on using history to predict the current, but Johnson is 3-1 in season openers at Navy, with the one loss coming last year against Maryland. In addition, Johnson is 13-5 when having more than a week’s preparation. East Carolina, on the other hand, hasn’t defeated a bowl team in three years. This is the first meeting between the schools.Spin Doctors: Johnson is unwilling to concede an advantage to his team which finished 8-4 last year (East Carolina’s record was 5-6). However, East Carolina Coach Skip Holtz said the programs are at different stages in their development. This is Holtz’s second year with the Pirates and while there have been improvements, he feels his program is just not there."They’re pretty much salivating at what they’re about to walk into," Holtz estimated. "Really if you look at it on paper, it’s a landslide. How do we stop them? I don’t know. We’re struggling with that right now."– Melanie HoHoly Cross at GeorgetownRecords: Season opener for both. When: 1 p.m.Where: Multi-Sport Field.Coaching Debut: After four years as special teams coordinator and linebackers coach at Navy, Kevin Kelly takes over a Georgetown program that lost four of its final five games last season to finish 4-7. The Hoyas have not had a winning season since 1999, the longest drought in school history. Kelly’s coaching adversary today, Tom Gilmore, is no stranger — both were assistants at Dartmouth in 1991.Patriot Games: With only eight seniors on the two-deep depth charts and 34 freshmen, the Hoyas have been chosen by the Patriot League’s coaches and sports information directors to finish last in the seven-team conference. The Crusaders, coming off a 6-5 campaign, were selected to place fourth behind Colgate, Lafayette and Lehigh. Last year Holy Cross thumped Georgetown, 48-6, in Worcester, Mass.Of Note: Senior linebacker Dan Adams (Robinson High), one of four Holy Cross captains, was the Division I-AA leader in average solo tackles per game last season with 8.8. . . . Senior defensive end Alex Buzbee, a two-time all-league selection, is fourth on Georgetown’s career sacks list with 22. . . . Hoyas sophomore quarterback Ben Hostetler (River Hill) is scheduled to make his second career start today. He was 10 of 25 for 115 yards and one touchdown in three appearances last year.– Steven Goff

RFK Stadium could hardly be further removed from the brick-encrusted, sushi-serving, retro-crazed baseball venues currently in vogue. Pete Farrell thinks that’s a good thing."After you’ve seen [retro stadiums] for the 83rd time, when you walk in there with the musty concourse and the paint peeling, it’s like ‘Ahhhhh, this feels right,’ " Farrell said.He knows of what he speaks. In 2002, the 35-year-old mail carrier from Buffalo and his close friend Andrew Kulyk , a 47-year-old exterminator, finished Nike Chris Neild Jersey their mission to visit every NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB venue, earning mentions on "The Today Show" and "SportsCenter" and in Sports Illustrated. Pro leagues, though, are not static things, so as new venues have opened and downtrodden Canadian baseball teams have relocated, the rules of their game have kept Farrell and Kulyk on the road. They make a sports-related trip about once every six weeks; they’ve also started visiting minor league baseball and hockey venues, and lately have been taken with college football stadiums. All the venues are photographed and then reviewed on their Web site, http://www.thesportsroadtrip.com/ .Last weekend, they crossed RFK off their list, taking in the Nationals and Game 4 of the Wizards-Heat series for good measure. Kulyk wore a Heat polo shirt on Saturday but promised he was rooting for the Wizards; the shirt was merely to honor Miami assistant and Buffalo legend Bob McAdoo , Kulyk explained at a downtown restaurant before ordering a Buffalo chicken sandwich. So how will RFK fare when its rating is revealed later this week?"All the newer buildings, they are nicer from the opulence standpoint, they do have more amenities, they are more fan friendly than a building like RFK," Farrell said. "It’s just a place to go in, grab a hot dog and a beer, grab your seat and watch some baseball. . . . And that’s good, especially in these days of overly corporate venues like that one out in Landover."Oh, do tell."Okay, FedEx Field — you go to a football game you expect to see guys in jeans, the smell of brats in the air, guys chugging beers," Kulyk said. Despite sound system problems and RFK’s limited concessions — mostly "old-fashioned ballpark dreck," Farrell said — the duo predicted Washingtonians would be very pleased with RFK’s score, which as of yesterday, had not been posted on the Web site.Between sightseeing trips, Farrell and Kulyk also went to the site of the Nats’ future home on the Anacostia River, "walked among the cement plants and hustlers and drug dealers," Kulyk said. And their recommendations?"Other than not leaving the cement plant next door, do something dramatic," Kulyk said. "Do something that says this is the nation’s capital. Do something architecturally bold. Don’t just do Camden Yards South."– Dan Steinberg
